The estimated number of people living with HIV and AIDS worldwide in 2007 was 33.2million. Sixty seven percent of these people live in Sub Saharan Africa. Ghana has a generalised epidemic with national HIV prevalence in 2008 of 1.7%.
Our HIV/AIDS Programme consists of three components: Behaviour Change Communication and Prevention, Policy ???? and Care and Support. Target groups include In and Out-of-School youth, religious groups, uniformed service personnel, professional groups, People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) and Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs).
Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) and Prevention component:
Preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS
Training of peer educators
Promoting positive sexual behaviours among high risk groups
Promoting correct and consistent use of condoms
Counseling and Testing
Disbursing funds to local Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) for the implementation of HIV/AIDS sub-projects
Supervising and monitoring activities of district level NGOs and CBOs
Policy component:
Advocating for the adoption of HIV/AIDS workplace policy documents
Enabling environment and rights
Care and Support component:
Offering care and support for OVCs and PLWHAs
Recent Activities:
Trained Personnel from six district level NGOs and one CBO in five districts.
Trained 100 In-School and 100 Out-of-School Peer Educators, and 50 Condom Distributors in five districts in the Brong Ahafo Region from August – September 2009 in collaboration with local partners.
Conducted Mobile Counseling and tested 2,200 people in collaboration with Ghana Health Service in five districts in the Brong Ahafo Region from August – September 2009.
Disseminated BCC materials to the general population.
Distributed 180,000 condoms from August - October 2009.
